Focus Area Leader: Tissue Morphology

The tissue morphology focus area is highly skilled in tissue processing, imaging, and analysis of decalcified and undecalcified histological tissue samples (both human and non-human). For the preparation of hard tissue sections, polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) embedding is routinely carried out.

The routine imaging techniques used include:

  • Bright field microscopy
  • Fluorescent and polarized imaging of sections
  • Analysis of intravital fluorochromes
  • Confocal microscopy
  • Scanning electron microscopy
  • White light profilometry
Typical techniques for characterizing tissue sections are descriptive analysis of the tissue response to test materials and quantitative histomorphometric analysis.
